IF WE COULD CHANGE HISTORY
In the series Pest AC, If We Could Change History colonial times are being investigated and questioned. If only these products had been available when the Duch started to colonize the East and West Indies, including the island of Manahatta/Manahahtáanung, and got rich by ‘trading’ as in war, genocide, looting, oppression, and slavery.
Cancel JP Coen. Jan Pieterszoon Coen was governor-general of the VOC (Dutch East India Company). For a nutmeg monopoly, he committed genocide on the Banda Islands, part of the Moluccas, Indonesia, in 1621, killing 14,000 inhabitants and enslaving and deporting 800. In his time, he was called the Butcher of Banda, giving the Dutch the name of ‘The cruelest nation in the entire world.’
’Cancel JP Coen’ aims to remove the large statue that is still honored in Coen’s birthplace Hoorn, the Netherlands, on a large pedestal on the main square in Hoorn. It was criticized already before its erection in 1893 when the Dutch needed some ‘national heroes’, and there have been many protests over the years. Caravan lead a protest procession and proclamation during the opening reception of the Art Allies group show, on October 13, 2024.

‘Allerwreedste Natie van de Gehele Wereld’ / ‘Cruelest Nation in the Entire World’, said by ex-governor-general Laurens Reael in the 17th century (Hagen 2018:865). On Banda, Coen had 44 tribal leaders, orang kaya, beheaded by Japanese samurai mercenaries. Their bodies were cut to pieces and their heads were put on stakes.‘Welke Executie zeer Wredelijk was om aan te zien’'/ ‘Which Execution was Very Cruel to watch’ according to an eye witness. The taped spot ‘OCCUPIED JP COEN’ at Westfries Museum refers to the garage sales on King’s Day in the Netherlands when everybody trades his stuff on the sidewalk, and days before claims a spot. It also questions the ‘trade’ and occupation of the East Indies by JP Coen and the VOC (Dutch East India Company)
MANAHAHTÁANUNG
The research started when traveling back and forth between New York and Amsterdam. The history of this city started with the ‘discovery’ of the island by Henry Hudson in 1609 and the fortress of Nieuw Amsterdam more than 400 years ago in 2024. My focus is on the people who already lived here for ages. If we could change history……
